What is a website?

You may wonder, what exactly is a website? It is a collection of interconnected webpages under one distinct domain name (which establishes an area of administrative authority), and is hosted on at least one web server (a computer system that processes HTTP requests). Websites are typically focused on a specific subject matter.

There are two main types of websites:

a) The static website which does not allow for direct interaction between the owner and the visitor.

b) Interactive website which allows for owner and visitor interaction. This is most commonly visible in E-commerce websites whereby the person visiting the site can interact by clicking on some variables in the site and receiving instant feedback. Many publicly accessible websites form the ever great World Wide Web (WWW). While privately owned websites form an Intranet system.

Websites have very many uses which include:

-Enhancing connectivity between family and friends through social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

-shopping is made easy through the e-commerce platform websites where you can shop from any corner of the earth.

-easy pay of taxes through governmental websites, a case study is I Tax system in Kenya whereby citizens in that country can file their taxes online from any corner of the country.

Steps on how to make a website:

These steps are easy and straightforward to understand for anyone trying to set up a Website for any given reason.

Step 1. Identify what need is driving you to set up the given website:

Do you need a personal blogging website, an e-commerce website or any kind of website? This is particularly important in that it will help you determine the best host services that suit your need perfectly.

Step 2. After identifying the right website you want to set up, now find the perfect Web host:

For example, let’s say you desire a personal blog website, most bloggers would prefer WordPress. This is for the mere fact that it is highly rated in its user interface which is considered ‘blogger friendly’

Step 3. Sign up for an account:

Most web hosts will require you to open an account with them for the purpose of accessing their services. You can sign up by entering your preferred username that is unique to you and then entering a strong password to ensure that only you can access the given account. If you want a place to get a free domain name and web hosting you can go to ‘blue host.com. They offer these services free of charge.

Step 4. Choose a unique domain name:

Which usually takes the form ‘WWW.yoursitename.com’ whereby ‘yoursitename’ can be the name of your preferred website. A domain name should be short and easy to remember especially if you would like to have large traffics to your site.

Step 5. Customize your website.

After getting a website go ahead to customize it according to your own taste. Most site owners have a saying that a site’s best portrays who you are.’ Go ahead now and make the most out of the customization variances in your site. Some web hosts like WordPress have premade classy themes one can choose from. It is still at this stage when you can upload your own HTML if the web host is compatible.

Step 6. Add valuable content:

You can now add valuable content to your site, for example, you can start by adding a welcome note on a page of your website to welcome visitors to your new website. If you are a blogger you can post your first blog on your new site.

Step 7. Publish your site:

If you are happy with the touch of your new website you can now publish it for other people to see and appreciate it.

Extra things to note:

•Adding pages to your site menu this is when trying to link new pages to your site navigation menu follow the following step. With your computer click on the update button, go to appearances, now go and find the page you created to link to the already existing list.
